Born in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv, Sonya Yoncheva has been heralded as one of the most acclaimed and exciting performers of her generation. She is the winner of several renowned competitions, including Operalia and was honored with an ECHO Klassik Award. Ms Yoncheva is an alumna of William Christie’s Le Jardin des Voix and has maintained a special focus the Early and Baroque repertory.
In the last three years she made her debuts in iconic roles such as Tosca at the Metropolitan Opera, Norma at the Royal Opera House London, Médée at the Staatsoper Berlin, Imogene in Il pirata at the Teatro alla Scala, Élisabeth de Valois in Don Carlos and Iolanta at the Paris Opera, all in new productions. She also made her role debut as Luisa Miller at the Met, where other performances included La Traviata, Iolanta, Otello and La Bohème. At the Salzburg Festival she sang the title role of L’incoronazione di Poppea last year and will return in the title role of Médée this year. Other future performances include the title roles of Manon Lescaut at the Metropolitan Opera, of Tosca at the Staatsoper Berlin and the Paris Opera and of Norma at the Bavarian State Opera as well as Desdemona in Otello in Baden-Baden and Berlin.
Sonya Yoncheva is a Sony Classical exclusive artist, where her solo albums The Verdi Album, Handel and Paris, mon amour have been released. Ms. Yoncheva is also a global ambassador for Rolex.
